Keibun

Japanese, (1779–1843)
Shiji" painter. Lived in Kyoto. Studied with his older brother Matsumura Goshun as well as with Maruyama Okyo. Also versed in the art theories of the Ming and Ching dynasties. Served as an attendant to Prince Shinnin, who had taken Buddhist vows; lived at the Myoho-in, Kyoto, which owns many of his paintings. From 1818 until his death, one of Kyoto's leading artists: made the position of the Shijo school secure. The equal of Goshun as an artist, noted particularly for his kachoga, which were often drawn from nature. -- Roberts, L. Dictionary of Japanese Artists (1980)
