Japanese, (1779–1846)
Nanga painter. Born in Bizen; worked in Kyoto. Eldest son and pupil of Uragami Gyokudo, also studied Chinese Ming and Yuan paintings. Joined conservative bunjin group of Rai San'yo. Sometimes collaborated with Yamamoto Baiitsu. His paintings are quite elaborate. His style is more Iyrical and gentle than that of his father and shows at times some influence of the naturalism of the Maruyama school as well as of the Nagasaki kachoga painters. -- Roberts, L. Dictionary of Japanese Artists (1980)
