Yokoku
Nagasaki painter
Japanese,
(1760–1801)
Nagasaki painter. Born in Nagasaki of partly Chinese ancestry. Lived in Tottori-ken, where he was adopted by the Nakayama family on marrying a daughter of the family; later adopted by the tea master Katayama Soha, whose heir he became. Studied the Shen Nan-p'in style. Rather an eccentric artist, with a great fondness for sake; specialized in painting kachoga. -- Roberts, L. Dictionary of Japanese Artists (1980)
