Kigyoku
Edo After Rimpa Painter
(1732–1756)
Nagasaki painter. Born and lived in Edo. Also known as a calligrapher. First a pupil of Kano Kyushin Takanobu; later a follower of Okamoto Zen'etsu; eventually became one of the ablest followers of Shen Nan-p'in. Much patronized in his lifetime. Small production —generally of birds-and-flowers, animals, trees, all very Chinese in style—because of his short life. -- Roberts, L. Dictionary of Japanese Artists (1980)
