Edo Ukiyoe painter
Japanese, (1771–1844)
Ukiyo-e painter, printmaker, illustrator. Born and lived in Edo. One of the outstanding pupils of Katsushika Hokusai. A good painter as well as printmaker. A prolific artist; designed many surimono: illustrated a number of books (especially kyoka), and is known chiefly for his paintings of bijin. Worked first in Kano style, then influenced by Hokusai but still retained something of Kano qualities; a delicate, quite charming manner. -- Roberts, L. Dictionary of Japanese Artists (1980)
