Early Edo Eccentric Painter
Japanese, b. fl. first half 17th c.
Soga painter. Lived in Sakai. Son and pupil of Soga Chokuan, who founded the Soga school. Some of his paintings have inscriptions by the famous Zen priest Takuan, a favorite of the shogun Iemitsu. Used the same seal as his father; as a result, their paintings are often confused. Specialized in paintng falcons; his reputation almost as great as his father's. -- Roberts, L.
