Japanese-style painter. Born in Ibaraki-ken to the family of a retainer of a daimyo. At first, studied with Kawabata Gyokusho; then, in 1896, graduated from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, where he came under theinfluence of Okakura Tenshin. Active in both the originaI Nihon Bijutsuin and in its revived form, where he was both an exhibitor and a prize winner. For half his career, specialized in kachoga that at times show a relation to the French decorative arts of the early 1900s; later, inclined to Buddhist subjects and large overdramatic compositions. -- Roberts, L.
