Chinzan
Japanese,
(1801–1854)
Nanga Painter. Born and lived in Edo. A samurai attached to the Tokugawa government. Studied first under Kaneko Kinryo, then under Tani Buncho, and finally under Watanabe Kazan, whose best pupil he was. Became teacher of Shoka, Kazan's son, after Kazan's death. Painted portraits of his master and many other people. His paintings have traces of Western perspective, learned from Kazan, but his themes — usually flowers — are purely Japanese.
