Japanese, (1752–1811)
Shijo painter. Born in Owari, Iived in Settsu and Kyoto. Studied first with Onishi Suigetsu; later, a pupil of Yosa Buson, with whom he also studied haiku, using at that time the go Gekkei. After 1781, adopted go Goshun. Following Buson's death, strongly influenced by Okyo. Eventually created his own style, founding the Shijo school (named after the street in which he lived), which tried to combine the realism of Okyo with the idealism of the nanga school. Skilled in haiku and calligraphy. Among his students were Matsumura Keibun and Okamoto Toyohiko. One of the greatest of the later Edo-period painters; his school had an enormous influence on l9th-century Japanese art. His pleasant work more intimate and spontaneous, less monumental than that of Okyo; used larger brushes, applying them more obliquely than Okyo. -- Roberts, L. Dictionary of Japanese Artists (1980)
