Periods

Japanese history is recorded in Periods; not in centuries as inWestern culture. The Periods we are dealing with here are set by the ruling family and are named basically by where this ruler places his Capital. The Edo Period began when Ieyasu took control of Japan and moved the Capital to Edo, presently called Tokyo. Since these Periods represent a change in control of the people; the arts usually took on a radical direction and is readily associated with whatever that ruler represented.
